The three big players right now
Claude (Anthropic)
Founded: 2021 by former OpenAI researchers including Dario and Daniela Amodei
Philosophy: Safety-first AI development. Anthropic uses a method called Constitutional AI to train Claude to be helpful, harmless, and honest.
Personality: Careful, thoughtful, tends toward nuance. More cautious than some alternatives.
Best for: Writing, analysis, long documents, thoughtful conversation, tasks where accuracy and care matter.
Free tier: claude.ai — generous free access.
ChatGPT (OpenAI)
Founded: 2015, the original AI company that sparked the current wave
Philosophy: Rapid capability development, broad accessibility
Personality: Conversational, often enthusiastic, slightly more willing to engage with edge cases
Best for: Wide variety of tasks; also has a code interpreter, image generation (DALL-E), and web browsing built in
Free tier: chat.openai.com — free basic access, paid tier for more features
Gemini (Google)
Founded: Google’s AI lab, with decades of search and language research
Philosophy: Integration with Google’s ecosystem (Search, Gmail, Docs)
Personality: Similar to Claude — careful and informative
Best for: Tasks where Google integration matters; useful if you’re already deep in Google Workspace
Free tier: gemini.google.com
Why Anthropic and Claude specifically?
Anthropic was founded on a specific belief: that as AI becomes more powerful, ensuring it is safe and beneficial becomes more important, not less. This led them to invest heavily in understanding how AI behaves, why it makes certain choices, and how to make it genuinely trustworthy.
The result is Claude — an AI with specific characteristics:
- Tends to be more careful about accuracy
- More willing to say “I’m not sure” rather than make something up
- Designed to be a long-term collaborator, not just a one-shot answer machine
- Has a genuine “personality” that many users find more pleasant to work with than alternatives
The CCA (Claude Certified Architect) certification is specifically about building reliable, safe, and powerful systems with Claude. Everything in this course — from D0 through D6 — is Claude-specific knowledge.
Do I have to choose?
No. Many professionals use multiple AI tools:
- Claude for long documents, careful writing, and analysis
- ChatGPT for quick questions or tasks requiring the code interpreter
- Gemini for tasks integrated with Google Workspace
The skills you’re building in this course — especially the prompting techniques from Lesson 5 — transfer across all these platforms. If you can write a great prompt for Claude, that same prompt will work well on ChatGPT or Gemini.
The philosophical difference that matters
This is worth understanding even if you never go beyond D0:
OpenAI and Google believe the benefits of rapidly advancing AI outweigh the risks, and they’re moving fast.
Anthropic believes the opposite risk — moving too fast without understanding what you’re building — is itself a serious danger. They deliberately slow down, study their models, and publish research on AI safety.
Neither position is obviously right or wrong. But it shapes what Claude is, how it behaves, and why this certification exists in the first place.
When you study for the CCA and then build things with Claude, you’re engaging with Anthropic’s approach to AI. Understanding that context helps you understand why Claude works the way it does — which in turn makes you better at using it.
You don’t need to pick a side in the AI company debate. But understanding the landscape helps you use these tools wisely and understand what’s at stake as AI continues to evolve.
